5 reasons to claim your power during Pride celebrations

Friday 1st August 2025
Since the discrimination and persecution against the LGBTQIA+ community, at the iconic Stonewall uprising of 1969 in New York, people have united to claim their power and to fight for their rights and social injustice. Every June all over the world, Pride honours the activism of Stonewall and reminds members of the LGBTQIA+ community that they are never alone.
Pride celebration are dedicated to the celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer culture and community. The themed international annual event draws millions of visitors worldwide and invites everyone to reflect on unity, while serving as a global call to action for the LGBTQIA+ community. As the Pride Month theme for 2025 is 'The Fabric of Freedom', it's a great opportunity to claim your power, and to help others make the world a better place for all of us.
1. Visibility
Pride is the prime time to proudly express your identity. Whether you're lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, or asexual (or straight), coming together as a community maximises public visibility in the world.
Marching in solidarity alongside a diverse array of people is an empowering and liberating experience. It amplifies the voices of those who may feel unheard and reinforces commitment to advocating for human rights for all.
Attending a Pride event with friends and loved ones demonstrates that you're claiming your power and that you refuse to hide who you really are. Be proud to stand tall and to be uniquely you.
2. Equality
Pride is a human rights protest movement that unites and fights for equality. It's also a celebration of diversity and life. Every year during Pride, the LGBTQIA+ community comes together in solidarity, hope and joy.
By claiming your personal power and joining a vibrant and colourful international Pride festival, you'll be supporting your empowered LGBTQIA+ allies to reclaim the rights and freedoms they've been denied.
You'll also be proudly taking your place in the movement that was built on the shoulders of activists. Your presence pays tribute to those who have gone before to attain rights for the community to be treated as equals, and to be who they authentically are.
3. Education
Pride is an excellent time to inspire your friends and family by being an empowered advocate for LGBTQIA+ human rights. You can help raise awareness of the human rights cause by sharing your personal experiences with others, and engaging with and educating individuals about advocacy for policies that protect the community from discrimination and stigma.
It's always a good idea to update your own knowledge, and to educate yourself about sexual health practices, STI prevention, and available resources.
When you're chatting and flirting with hot guys on Gay Chat Zone – the UK's busiest gay phone chat line service – you have an opportunity to do your bit for the activism movement by sharing information about Pride, and offering a judgment-free space for open communication.
Speaking up about important issues, calling out discrimination when you can, and being there for the people in your life who need support are also part of being a good LGBTQIA+ community educator and ally.
4. Wellbeing
Discrimination and prejudice against LGBTQIA+ people is an ongoing issue all over the world. Many individuals struggle with mental health problems due to feeling that it's not safe for them to be who they truly are, and society's declaration that their voice doesn't matter. It can be a tough time when you're struggling with your sexuality or gender identity on your own.
By choosing to view Pride as a positive catalyst for change, you can claim your power back and overcome personal issues like low self-esteem and social isolation. Joining likeminded people in the LGBTQIA+ community can have a favourable impact on your mental health, as you can support, encourage, inspire and motivate each other to live your best life.
Being part of an inclusive culture can uplift and empower individuals to practice essential self-care, to seek support, and to accept that they no longer need to navigate the world in isolation.
5. Connection
